One of the major benefits of choosing terrazzo is its durability. Terrazzo floors still stand in many buildings throughout ancient Venice, including at least one thought to have been installed as early as 1480. An epoxy terrazzo floor can be expected to outlast the life of the building it is installed in.
Given the non-porous nature of epoxy terrazzo, only minimal cleaning is required. A terrazzo floor will almost certainly never require replacement, as opposed to carpet, vinyl flooring or tile, which needs periodic replacement, especially in high foot-traffic areas. Because of the low maintenance necessary and the permanence of the system, there is no question that terrazzo “pays for itself” over time.
However, it’s still important to maintain your investment with regular cleaning.
Cracking is the most common form of failure and is typically caused by the structural system that supports the terrazzo topping rather than the material itself. However, contact with alkalis or acids can deteriorate the bonding agents used in terrazzo. As the aggregates are often marble dust which is calcium carbonate, strong acid can also cause deterioration to the aggregates.
